The French thinker and political theorist Georges Sorel (1847-1922), fired up by his interest in Marxism and his anger at the injustice of the Dreyfus case, faced this challenge and in the seven chapters of Reflections on Violence he explored the question. It proved sufficiently stimulating over succeeding decades to be espoused by both Marxists and Fascists alike: class struggle, revolution and above all radical change were central to Sorel’s thought.  

Considered one of the more controversial books from the 20th century, Sorel's Reflections on Violence argues in favor of uprisings and strikes by the working class, which can be organized through the use of revolutionary myths. In the course of these direct actions any means is considered necessary and acceptable for the achievement of revolutionary politics. Upon successful overthrow of any established system, including democratic systems, the uprising working class can then setup syndicates as the only representative body of the people.
